Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret
This well researched and thought provoking documentary is fast becoming a must see among vegans and the vegan-curious, parallel to films such as Earthlings, Vegucated and Forks over Knives.
The film follows the journey of Kip Andersen the film maker’s conscience, and his discoveries about how his life choices as an individual have an impact on the environment. As well as practising all the usual habits of a good environmentalist such as biking for transport, conserving water and recycling waste, Kip starts looking into the impact of an omnivorous diet, eventually coming to the conclusion that veganism is the only way forward.
This documentary does a great job of using clear and concise graphics to spell out how animal agriculture consumes incredible volumes of land, water, and crops, which produces vast amounts of greenhouse gasses and waste, but a relatively small amount of food. Even more surprising than the realisation that animal products are such a huge burden on our planet, is that the issue seems to have escaped most major conservation organisations, which is beautifully demonstrated by the humorous and often bewildering interviews in the film.
It was a full house with all 50 tickets sold and the majority of people joined in with the pot luck vegan buffet that we had before the showing began. It was a lovely way to meet some new vegans, old friends and introduce some Omni friends to the possibilities of vegan food. We were very grateful to everyone who brought food to share, from some very indulgent home-made desserts to all sorts of savoury goodies.
Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket and supported this event, most of the proceeds went to the film makers directly, with some left over that went towards making Swansea Vegfest in June a success.
We thoroughly recommend watching Cowspiracy if you haven’t already, and although it can feel overwhelming it really is a great resource to understand the environmental arguments supporting veganism, and a great tool to share with others looking to make a change.
